Tuesday signaled the start of fall sports for Greene County High School with the volleyball team traveling to Glidden-Ralston for a triangular with Collins-Maxwell.

Volleyball coach Chris Heisterkamp begins her sixth year coaching at the varsity level and her third year at Greene County. Adrianna Vargas will assist.

The Rams went 12-20 on the season last year and have three positions to fill that were vacated by outgoing seniors. One of those seniors was Aubrey Heupel, the team’s setter, who passed the 1,000 career mark for assists. Natalie Heupel, a sophomore, will replace her sister in that position.

“After losing three seniors last year, we’re in the process of forming a new connection with our returning letter winners and our newcomers. They have good energy and are learning to flow together,” noted Heisterkamp.

Returning letter winners are senior Brianna Osterson, a second team All-Conference player; seniors Lily Muir and Eliza Carlson; and sophomores Natalie Heupel, Katrina Heupel and Bella Schroeder.

Joining the team this fall are junior Brianna Habben and freshman Kaylee Stalder. Habben lent her skills to the basketball court and will help the volleyball team as a right side blocker. Stalder is an outside hitter.

There have been some changes in the Heart of Iowa Conference. North Polk and Gilbert have left the conference and the Trojans of West Marshall will enter the competition.

Nevada and Roland-Story are expected to lead the conference on the volleyball court.

“In pre-season scrimmages, we’ve seen a lot of great action,” stated Heisterkamp. “Of course, there are many things to work on, but we are committed to put in the work, make the changes that are needed, and show up every day ready to be serious competitors.”

Note: The Ram tournament scheduled for September 5 has been rescheduled to October 3.
